ACS took first place in the first annual 2010 Craven County Fire & Life Safety Quiz Bowl on Friday, Feb. 26. The team, made up of five 4th and 5th graders and coached by Mrs. Bonacci, cruised to the final round, where they beat Creekside Elementary. Congrats to Matt, Jamison, Madeline, Jordan & Dennis! Way to go, Saints!
ACS participants, chosen by lottery from the 4th and 5th Grade classes, took the first round against Calvary Baptist Church School, 18-8. ACS then edged out A.H. Bangert Elementary, 18-11 in Round 2 to advance to the Final Round. The Saints won the title from Creekside Elementary, 19-7. Trent Park Elementary was the fifth participating school.
From the Marines.mil website: New Bern Fire-Rescue hosted the Quiz Bowl at the headquarters station on Neuse Blvd. The event was the first event of its kind in eastern North Carolina (The State Quiz Bowl is in its second year). The Quiz Bowl was a bracket-style tournament where teams answered questions pertaining to Fire & Life Safety topics (17 topics). Five teams from different Craven County schools competed this year.
During the tournament, participants, parents, and school officials had time to visit different areas to view static displays, informational booths, and a power point presentation. The local "Pedro" Search and Rescue unit from MCAS Cherry Point was one of the static displays. Information was passed on how the "Pedro" unit works with local fire departments for medical transport, water rescue, etc.
